The state of Uttarakhand was formed on 9 November 2000, earlier Uttarakhand was known as Uttaranchal. Uttaranchal state is the 27th state of the country which was carved out of Uttar Pradesh. Uttaranchal was renamed Uttarakhand in January 2007. The meaning of Uttarakhand is “the place of the north”. The capital of Uttarakhand is Dehradun. Dehradun has been made the summer capital of Uttarakhand and Gairsain as the winter capital.

Out of 13 districts of Uttarakhand, only 3-4 districts have most of the plains. Apart from this, all the districts of Uttarakhand come in the hill districts only. Therefore it can be said that the weather in Uttarakhand is mostly cold. Snowfall is common in most parts of the hilly districts during winters. Tourists coming from outside to hill tourist places should take care to bring warm clothes with them. The situation also becomes dangerous during the winter season. At many hill stations, the temperature drops to less than -10 degrees.
