About the error

This error code comes up as soon as you begin updating the payroll or sometimes in between the process. The payroll update won’t continue further after this error strikes the software. Your QBDT might also crash or freeze for a few seconds after the error terminates the payroll update. You must resolve this error quickly as you won’t be able to sync the software with the latest tax table of the government, and it can also cause problems when you try sending the payroll. You needn’t worry about the software’s data as it isn’t affected by the error, and you can use it without problems after eliminating the payroll error from your computer.

Primary causes

This error becomes a barrier when you try downloading the latest tax table updates on your QBDT. The following reasons can be blamed for the occurrence of this payroll error on your QuickBooks Desktop-

  1. The TLS and SSL settings aren’t correctly set up on your Windows leading to network connection issues during payroll updates.
  2. Windows Firewall settings restrict QBDT from using the internet or retrieving its program files from the system drives.
  3. You missed the renewal date of the payroll service, and the subscription isn’t active on your QB.
  4. QBDT’s connection to the server times out due to an incompatible web browser and its junk files or inaccurate timings of the system clock.
  5. Technical glitches due to faulty installation of QBDT on your PC can also lead to a failure in payroll update.
  6. QuickBooks fails to retrieve a crucial file from the CPS folder required to download and install the payroll update package.

Countermeasures

Although it’s just a payroll update error, it can escalate and harm your business as you won’t be able to send the employee payroll or calculate taxes using the software. Consider the following solutions to rectify the payroll issue effectively from the bookkeeping software-

Method 1- Set up the TLS & SSL settings correctly in your Windows

Windows uses several protocol layers to prevent your system and data while accessing the internet. There are dangerous malwares and malicious threats that can enter your PC or damage your data when your transfer it over the internet. Transport Layer Security (TLS) and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) keep your data safe when you access the internet. But they can also stop your system from connecting to the internet if not configured properly. QB payroll updates can also get affected by incorrect settings, which you can fix using the steps mentioned underneath-

  1. Access the Internet Options window from the control panel or type ‘inetcpl.cpl’ in the Run window (Windows+R).
  2. Navigate to the Advanced tab and scroll the settings down to reveal TLS & SSL checkboxes.
  3. Mark Use TLS 1.1, Use TLS 1.2&Use SSL 3.0 checkboxes and leave all the other settings (TLS & SSL) checkboxes unmarked.
  4. Tap Apply located at the bottom of the tab, to save the settings and close the Internet Options window.

You must ensure the payroll subscription is active and your software is activated after a recent update. Use the following steps-

  1. Go to the No Company Open window (close all company files) in QuickBooks and restart your system.

Method 4- Configure the Web Browser settings and remove junk/temporary files

Network timeout or blocked access to the internet are common reasons for the payroll update to get blocked in QBDT. These issues can trouble you if the web browser you use on your Windows is incompatible with QuickBooks and fails to perform its functions. Intuit also recommends the inbuilt web browsers of your OS to prevent issues when QBDT tries integrating with web applications. Use the following steps-

  1. Launch the control panel on your PC using the Settings icon in the Windows Start menu.
  2. Click the Apps menu can select Default Apps on the left panel.
  3. Scroll down to Web Browser and set original Windows browsers like Microsoft Edge/ Internet Explorer as the default system browser.

After the correct web browser is set as default, you must remove the junk files from the browser, which can also hinder the network connection. Temporary files like cookies, cache, etc., saved on the web browser can create problems while toggling between websites. Refer to these steps-

  1. Open the web browser you selected as default in Windows settings.
  2. Press Ctrl+H to access your browsing history, or use the three vertical dots on the top right.
  3. Click Clear Browsing data and mark the checkboxes for cached data, cookies, and all the other junk files.
  4. Press Clear Now or Delete to remove them from the browser.
  5. Run QuickBooks and try updating the payroll again.

If the payroll updates fail again, move to the following method.

Method 5- Use QB tool hub to fix the software issues and arrange the timings of the system clock

QBDT and other applications can suffer from internet connectivity issues if the servers fail to maintain a stable connection with your system due to inaccurate timings in the system clock. You must always keep your clock accurate to prevent issues when Intuit servers try to sync the payroll update timings. Use these steps-

  1. Right-click the clock on the taskbar and select Adjust Date/time in the pop-up options list.
  2. Tap the Set time automatically option or adjust it manually.
  3. Save the changes and close the window.

You’ll also have to run the QB tool hub to remove minor issues that might interfere with the payroll update. Here are the steps-

  1. Launch QB Tool hub on your system and single-click the Program Problems menu.
  2. Click the Quick fix my program option and let the tool remove the technical bugs.
