How to make your own straw bucket hat?

What You’ll Need

  • A straw
  • Scissors
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • A piece of paper
  • Pen or pencil

Instructions

1. Cut a circular piece of paper that will fit comfortably inside your hat. This will be your template.

2. Trace the base of the template onto the brim of the hat with a pen or pencil. Make sure that the circle is centered on the brim.

3. Using scissors, cut along the traced line. Be careful not to cut too close to the edge of the brim, as this may cause the straw to unravel.

4. Turn the hat upside down and gently push out the top of the crown until it is about half its original height.

Step One: Cut the Band

Start by cutting a band out of your fabric. You’ll want it to be about 10 inches wide and 22 inches long. Fold the band in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and press.

Next, cut a piece of interfacing to the same dimensions as your fabric band. Center the interfacing on the wrong side of the band and fuse in place following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Now fold the band in half again lengthwise, enclosing the interfacing. Pin in place and stitch along the long edges with a ½-inch seam allowance, leaving a 2-inch turning gap at one end. Trim away any excess interfacing that extends beyond the seam allowances.

Step Two: Cut the Top

Now that you have the perfect circled top, it’s time to cut a hole in the center. This is where your straw will eventually peep through. Use a sharp knife or a pair of scissors to cut a hole that’s about four inches in diameter.

Step Three: Sew the Band

Sew the band to the hat using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Start at one side of the band and sew it to the hat, making sure that the band is line up evenly with the edge of the hat. Sew around the entire circumference of the hat until you reach the other side of the band.

Step Four: Sew the Top

Once you have your fabric cut out, it’s time to sew the top of the hat. First, take the top piece of fabric and fold it in half lengthwise. Sew along the long side, using a seam allowance of about 1/2 inch. Then, turn the fabric right side out and press it flat.

Next, take the brim piece of fabric and fold it in half lengthwise. Sew along the long side, using a seam allowance of about 1/2 inch. Then, turn the fabric right side out and press it flat.

Now, take the top piece of fabric and align it with the brim piece of fabric, matching up the raw edges. Sew along the raw edge, using a seam allowance of about 1/2 inch.

Finally, serge or zigzag over all the raw edges to finish them off.

Step Five: Finish the Hat

Now that you have a completed rim and band, it’s time to finish the hat. In order to do this, you will need to thread a needle with a length of strong thread. Begin by knotting the end of the thread, then insert the needle through the bottom of the band. Pull the thread through until the knot stops it from going any further.

Next, take the needle and thread around the outside edge of the rim. Make sure that you catch each piece of fabric as you go. Once you have gone all the way around, pull the thread tight and knot it off. Trim any excess thread from the hat.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for a stylish and unique summertime accessory, look no further than the straw bucket hat! This simple DIY project is perfect for beginners, and with just a few supplies and some basic sewing skills, you can create a one-of-a-kind hat that will turn heads all season long.
